Two Adoptions!

I’m excited to announce that we are officially in line to adopt a child from Uganda!   Back in August we started this adoption process with Generations Adoptions.  We’ve now finished with all the required paperwork and so we’re now in line for a referral (match).  They are estimating this wait will be approximately 6 months.  After we receive and accept a referral, then they estimate we might get a court date in a month or two.  We’re able to travel as soon after our referral as we wish, but we won’t have custody until after the court date.

We’re planning on doing this concurrently with our Rwanda adoption.  We are able to do this because Generations doesn’t have a policy against it (unlike many agencies), and because we’re not with an agency in Rwanda.  The timeline on our Rwanda adoption is still very uncertain.  While we have been approved by the Rwanda government to adopt, our paperwork is still sitting at the Ministry (government office).   From what I’ve heard, Home of Hope, the one orphanage that Rwanda adopts from, doesn’t have many adoptable infants right now.  The orphanage currently has a large stack of waiting families and the Ministry isn’t going to hand over another stack of waiting families (which may include us) until more adoptions have gone through.  Once our paperwork is at the orphanage then we will have a chance at a referral at any time since they are not necessarily going in order.   There was a big stink/scare that our paperwork was going to expire after 6 months from our approval, but we’re now hearing and seeing that this hasn’t and won’t been enforced.

We’re guessing our Uganda adoption will happen before the Rwanda adoption.  Right now we have our US government approval (171H) and our home study specifying Uganda; however, if we hear from Rwanda before Uganda, then we’ll get those documents changed back to Rwanda (and then immediately switch it back to Uganda after everything was finalized).  The change isn’t really too hard, it just takes a little money, time and patient (and maybe some begging for a quick turn-over).  But after what we’ve been through that’s all cake!

We’re cautiously excited, but excited!
